SPINGLE × ONGAESHI Project: Second wave of recycled origami crane sneakers "SPM-1005R"
What is the "ONGAESHI Project"?
The ONGAESHI Project is a peace education initiative for children led by Camino Co., Ltd. that recycles folded paper cranes donated to Hiroshima and Nagasaki into paper and thread.
In this initiative, Camino Co., Ltd. takes the lead in recycling the cranes sent to Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Okinawa and other places from all over the world with prayers for peace, and regenerates them into recycled paper and fibers. Instead of storing the many cranes sent to Hiroshima and other places with prayers for peace for a long time, they are being regenerated into new products, in gratitude for the people's thoughts. As one example, they thought that sending recycled cranes to children would be a Japanese way of giving back, so they named the recycled cranes "return of favor paper" and processed them into origami and construction paper, which they donate to schools and organizations working to realize peace.
The first model received a great response
The first origami crane recycled model "SPM-1005" was released in May last year (2022). The trigger for planning and developing it was learning about the existence of the ONGAESHI project. As a company based in Hiroshima, we deeply sympathized with the project and decided to sell it.
The response to this first model was overwhelming, and with Hiroshima attracting much attention from around the world as the site of the G7 Summit in 2023, the second model, the SPM-1005R, was born from the desire to spread this project, which is filled with prayers for peace, to a wider world through sneakers.
Developed in collaboration with a fabric manufacturer. Canvas fabric made from recycled origami crane yarn.
The thread recycled from folded paper cranes, "Origami rayon thread," is very delicate and extremely difficult to use as a material for sneakers as is. Therefore, we worked with Shinohara Textile Co., Ltd. , a local fabric manufacturer in the Bingo region of Hiroshima Prefecture, and spent about a year developing a canvas fabric that was strong enough to be used for sneakers.
SPM-1005R Design
We went through a process of trial and error to find a way to create a sneaker that would convey the spirit of the project, and one that would be appreciated purely as a product by both Spingle fans and sneaker fans.
As a Hiroshima brand and company, they want to convey "the feelings behind the origami cranes" and "the message of recycling origami cranes" through this product. The design makes the most of the material, incorporating a thousand paper cranes motif and taking advantage of the texture of the original canvas fabric.
Our thoughts
We hope that by enjoying wearing the shoes as fashion, those who come into contact with them will be inspired to feel something new, such as about the project, the feelings that are put into the origami cranes, and the message that comes from recycling the origami cranes.
In addition, the sole is made of RUBEAR CNF sole, which has 40% improved wear resistance (compared to our previous model), allowing you to wear the shoes for even longer.
